Behavior Consultation

Understanding Behavior. Creating Meaningful Change.

When behavior begins to interfere with daily routines, relationships, community participation, or independence, families may find themselves asking:“Why is this happening and what can we do differently?”

At Supported Behavior, our Behavior Consultation services help autistic adolescents and adults and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities better navigate behavioral challenges that may be affecting their everyday lives.

Rather than focusing only on stopping a behavior, we work to understand why the behavior may be occurring, what the individual may be communicating, and what skills or supports may be needed instead.

Using evidence-based principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), we develop individualized strategies that focus on meaningful, practical change while respecting the individual's dignity, preferences, and independence.

When Behavior Becomes a Barrier

Behavior becomes a concern when it begins interfering with an individual's ability to participate successfully in everyday life.

Families may seek Behavior Consultation for concerns such as:

  • Aggression

  • Self-injurious behavior

  • Property destruction

  • Verbal outbursts

  • Refusal or avoidance

  • Difficulty with transitions

  • Difficulty accepting changes in routine

  • Emotional or behavioral escalation

  • Challenges tolerating denied or delayed access

  • Repetitive behavior that significantly interferes with daily activities

  • Difficulty completing hygiene or self-care routines

  • Challenges participating in household responsibilities

  • Difficulty accessing the community

  • Behaviors interfering with employment or vocational activities

  • Communication-related frustration

  • Difficulty with personal boundaries

  • Other behaviors limiting independence or quality of life

Every situation is different. Before recommending strategies, we work to understand the individual and the circumstances surrounding the behavior.
